This will form a circle or collar of satin ribbon. The elastic will allow you to insert the stems of your tussie mussie in the center. Every experienced hiker carries Duct Tape. Why?

• Duct Tape is your rigging when your pack suddenly suffers a mechanical failure.

• It’s your bandage when you cut yourself.

• It’s what you wrap your feet in when they get blistered.

• You can wrap your food in it.

• You can repair damaged clothing.

• You can use it to spell out an SOS sign in a tree or on the ground.

• When your water bottle leaks, Duct Tape provides the fix.

• Someone at the shelter keeping you from sleeping because they’re snoring too loudly? Try closing their mouth with Duct Tape. There’s almost nothing you can encounter on the Appalachian Trail for which Duct Tape will not provide an instant solution.

How to Create a Straw Bale Garden

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kDSiTMrjkiA/TcKuMB0uZnI/AAAAAAAAFv4/BTdv8IwK8ts/s400/charlotteforblog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603232408073561714" />
Courtesy of Charlotte Nelson

Day 1-3

Water bales thoroughly for first three days. I watered in the a.m. and p.m.

Day 4-6

Once a day, sprinkle each bale with 1/2 cup of Ammonium Nitrate (32-0-0), then thoroughly water. (If you cannot find 32-0-0, get as close as possible to those numbers, for example 30-0-0 or 29-0-0.)

Day 7-9

Once a day, reduce Ammonium Nitrate to 1/4 cup and sprinkle into each bale and water thoroughly.

Day 10

NO MORE AMMONIUM NITRATE. But do add 1 cup of 10-10-10 fertilizer to each bale and water thoroughly.

Day 11

Plant your garden.

A few hints from my experience:

• I placed 3 inches of potting soil on top of each bale on day 10 after 10-10-10 fertilizer is added.

• Use a spatula to push the transplants into the bale. It opens the bale a little better than your hand. (I plant my squash from seed.)

• Plant each transplant to the first leaves and press straw back together. (I planted roma tomatoes, all kinds of pepper, eggplant, squash, zucchini and you could even do cucumbers, strawberries, cabbage … whatever grows well for you.)

• I choose one day as Miracle Grow day. I use Miracle Grow every other Friday.

• YOU MUST WATER DAILY. I water in the a.m. and then in the p.m.

• NEVER LET THEM DRY OUT. I have found the bales will eventually stay pretty moist and you can judge if the bale is moist enough.

• Tall plants, like corn or okra, supposedly will not do well, but I have not tried them.

How to make paper flowers

By Tina Neely

Supplies

8 to 10 sheets of tissue paper
Scissors
Floral wire or pipe cleaners

Step 1

Open your pack of tissue paper and unfold it, laying it all out flat, stacking eight 20-by-30-inch sheets of tissue. (Note: For full, bigger flowers like ours, use the full sheets. For smaller flowers, cut the tissue paper in half, giving you 16 sheets, enough for two flowers out of one pack of tissue.) For more contrast in your flower, consider mixing two coordinating colors of tissue in your stack. It will give it a more vibrant, artful look. Standard tissue paper can be purchased in a large variety of colors and prints in the stationary/gift wrap section of most any store.

Step 2

Make 1- to 1-1/2-inch-wide accordion folds in the tissue, creasing with each fold. With scissors, trim the ends of the folded tissue into desired shapes. For more rounded petals and a prettier flower, use scissors to round the edges. To make petals that look like dahlias cut the ends in points.

* When selecting the wire fastener, keep in mind how you will be displaying your flowers. For use in a vase, tying onto a package, making a napkin ring or hanging from above, use long pipe cleaners or floral wire. For flowers to be placed on the table or glued to artwork, use a small piece of wire or a twist tie. As always, if you are making these flowers with children use safety scissors and supervise the children.

Step 4

Separate the layers, pulling them away from the center one at a time. Be sure to separate the left and right side towards the center to make the flower’s shape more apparent. Separate carefully since the tissue can tear easily when pulling layers apart.

Fluff as desired and ...

hang your easy-to-make, attractive paper flowers!

Win a copy of "Sisters on the Fly"!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 397px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_r-iMNjiCcq0/TSYRUfV79nI/AAAAAAAAFu0/xUcLbEkonWQ/s400/SistersOnTheFly.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5559149833744021106" />The January/February 2011 issue of Newnan-Coweta Magazine includes a feature on some fun women who restore vintage campers and are members of the national group "Sisters on the Fly." A book by the same name, written by Irene Rawlings, tells the history of the organization and includes tips for finding and restoring a camper of your own. There are lots of great photos of Sisters' campers and even recipes for Sister treats such as Bread on a Stick and Tacky Trailer Campfire Trout. We're giving away a copy of the book to one lucky winner who is a resident of Coweta County. To enter, just leave a comment to this post before 7 a.m. on Jan. 21, and we'll post the name of the winner later that day. If you don't have a Google account you may still leave a comment, just be sure to include an e-mail address where we can find you if you win! Here are few of Tina's helpful hints to help you select and install your own fireplace.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_r-iMNjiCcq0/TRo4KQycnHI/AAAAAAAAFuU/bv9oH6x7wp8/s400/before6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555814839271332978" /> 1. Selecting the fireplace insert. How big do you want it? What kind of space are you trying to fit it in? How much space are you trying to heat? Are you going with vented or ventless? These are some questions you need to consider when looking at your fireplace options. Shop online, at local home improvement stores, and especially check with local gas companies, as they can give you more expert advice and more than likely have more floor models to choose from. Also, you’ll need them to either hook up or test your gas system when you’re done.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_r-iMNjiCcq0/TRo3xe7CEJI/AAAAAAAAFuM/uuw7VPAjcSA/s400/before2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555814413568708754" />2. Decide where you want it. In our case we wanted it on a focal wall and knew we were going to place the television up top. Keep in mind you need to consider how much space the insert will need and hether you have the room for it. We chose to put half of the insert into the closet on the other side of the wall and leave the other half coming out into the bedroom because I wanted to have something more than just a flat wall to put more rocks on. We centered it and got lucky; when we cut out the hole for it, it completely missed my closet and only took up a foot of my husband’s walk-in closet. We didn’t even have to move the clothes rack.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_r-iMNjiCcq0/TRo3X7C-B8I/AAAAAAAAFuE/pqzEi-zSUdY/s400/before5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555813974441592770" />
3. Box it in, considering how high you want it off the floor and how high you want your hearth to be. We constructed our hearth about 18” from the floor. The insert was framed up and boxed in. Before it was installed and boxed in, we made plans for running the hard pipe for the gas lines and also got lucky on the plug- in for the TV, just moving an outlet that was lower down on the wall up higher.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 271px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_r-iMNjiCcq0/TRo58AWHCiI/AAAAAAAAFus/AK8kv-9hqpQ/s400/rocks.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555816793362598434" />4. With some help, we slid the insert in place, secured it and started getting ready to stack stone it. We have done a lot of things in our house, from simply painting, to laying hardwoods, tile and trim work, but never have we tried stack stoning. But as a true do-it-yourselfer at heart, I researched a few YouTube videos, like the one here from the DIY Network, and Daddy and I were off. The wire was nailed on the plywood, then a layer of mortar was applied to the wire, the scratch coat, which gives the concrete you put on the back of the rocks something to adhere to. I went to a local stack stone dealer here in town and picked out the colors that I wanted, figured up my square footage and brought home a few boxfuls in the truck. We got what is used most in construction now and what you’ll find at most stores/dealers, which a manmade rock. It weighs less and allows for much easier application.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_r-iMNjiCcq0/TRo5i4R6dyI/AAAAAAAAFuk/Mor81FwMyh0/s400/horizontal.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555816361700783906" />5. After your scratch coat has dried, you’re ready to start stacking your rocks. Use a mortar that is made to match your rocks, as I didn’t do that and wish I had! Trust me, you will notice it and it will make a difference, so make sure it matches, cover the back of your rock and stick it on. Using vary sizes and heights we worked our way across the fireplace and then stacked them up on top of each other till we got to the top.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_r-iMNjiCcq0/TRo5fu1GOzI/AAAAAAAAFuc/SSF8rrshtnI/s400/fireplace.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555816307624393522" />6. After the mortar dried, my Daddy then finished it off by making a mantel out of 1 x 6's and some trim work that we got at the local hardware store. As I painted it white to match the floor trim and crown, he ran the gas lines through and had the gas company test it just make sure there weren't any leaks, as you will need to do also if you run the line yourself. If they run the lines for you, they are always sure to test it. We lit the pilot light, and with the flip of a switch, voila — we were ready for a cozy fire!
